This is one of those times where I say to myself “Why didn’t I think of that?” The video below shows Mike Tompkins, a London, Ontario record producer, performing and recording covers of two popular songs. He plays all of the instruments himself and he actually gets the sound pretty close to the originals.
In this day and age, maybe not such an impressive feat considering a search on Youtube for your favorite song will more often than not lead you to a slew of very bad web cam captured renditions. But this is a little different.
Mike has taken a more non-traditional route – everything you hear in the song was done with his mouth. Every guitar, bass, drum and synth comes from an instrument we have all been equipped with from birth and the result is really impressive.
Being somewhat of a musician I must say I’m a little jealous I didn’t come up with something like this myself. But to give the guy credit he has been beat boxing since he was 8 years old and not many people could recreate what he has done.
Moral of the Story: Get good at a couple things instead of trying to be okay at everything. Success follows those that have the focus of a laser – not a light bulb. It takes 10,000 hours to become an expert at something. Time to get crackin’. Now watch the video.
